When you think of people who are routinely going hungry, you might think of those who are in the midst of a famine or those who live in very impoverished countries. However, it might surprise you to learn that the same levels of hunger and lack of available food resources are prevalent right in your own community. Here at Food For Days, we want to help bring awareness to the issue of food insecurity and how you can help.

  • Food Insecurity is a Real Problem. Did you know that nearly 15% of Americans are worried about being able to feed their families? Sometimes it is due to a lack of resources, while other times it is because of a lack of accessible grocery stores in the area.
  • Many Children Routinely go Hungry- Young children are at risk or go hungry. Over 16 million children are hungry or at risk, with 3 million of those being under the age of 5.
  • Hunger Has a Negative Impact on Growth & Development. The body needs certain nutrients for growth and development. When you are forced into skipping meals or eating poor quality meals, you might not get the nutrients your body needs for proper growth.
  • Food Insecurity is a Quality AND Quantity Problem. Being food insecure doesn’t always mean a lack of food, it can also mean a lack of variety of food. Eating a varied diet is important to getting a well-balanced mix of nutrients.
  • Poverty is Not Always the Problem. The poverty line is not always a clear indicator of hunger. 45% of households considered to be hungry still earn enough to be over the poverty line.
  • There are Not Enough Food Banks. With 37 million people needing help and only around 200 food banks, we are requiring each food bank to feed 185,000 people.
  • Lack of Food is Linked to Behavioral Problems. Children who are without enough food can exhibit behavioral problems such as depression, anxiety, lethargy or acting out in class.
  • You can Help! Food For Days is a great way to help children right in your own community with donations of food, money, or time.
